Over 50,000 residents in New Orleans, including areas like Uptown, Mid-City, and Lakeview, faced widespread power outages due to a load-shed order from the Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO).
This was a last-resort measure to prevent a larger grid failure. The outages occurred during a time of high heat, making air conditioning critical for survival, especially in older, poorly insulated homes.
Residents expressed frustration, with one stating, “I don’t think it’s right for them to just turn your power off at this time of year when everyone needs it so badly.”
The lack of power disrupted daily life, leaving people without cooling, lighting, or access to essential appliances, highlighting the vulnerability of the city’s aging infrastructure.
